Variations in institutional ownership in refining stocks

Institutional ownership in Marathon Petroleum (MPC), Andeavor (ANDV), Valero Energy (VLO), and Phillips 66 (PSX) stood above 60% in March 2018. Institutional ownership is the highest in VLO, at ~83%. The lowest institutional ownership is in PSX, at ~65%. Institutional ownership in both MPC and ANDV stands at ~82%.

Institutional ownership in MPC

The institutions with the most holdings in Marathon Petroleum include The Vanguard Group, BlackRock Institutional Trust Company, State Street Global Advisers, and Wellington Management Company. On average, analyzing the past six months’ data, the Vanguard Group has increased its total holdings in MPC. The remaining three institutions have decreased their total holdings in Marathon Petroleum.

Kensico Capital Management and Elliott Management Corporation have sold the most MPC shares in the past six months. Goldman Sachs Asset Management and JP Morgan Asset Management have acquired the most MPC shares.

Institutional ownership in ANDV

The institutions with the most holdings in Andeavor are The Vanguard Group, Boston Partners, State Street Global Advisers, and BlackRock Institutional Trust Company. On average, analyzing the past six months’ data, all four institutions have increased their holdings in the company.

Hound Partners and Slate Path Capital have sold the most ANDV shares in the past six months. Boston Partners and Fidelity International have acquired the most ANDV shares.

Institutional ownership in VLO

The institutions with the biggest ownership of VLO include The Vanguard Group, BlackRock Institutional Trust Company, State Street Global Advisers, and Fidelity Management and Research Company. In the past six months, all four institutions have increased their holdings in VLO.

SunAmerica Asset Management has been the biggest seller of VLO shares in the past six months. Fidelity Management and Research Company has been the biggest buyer of VLO shares.

Institutional ownership in PSX

The institutions with the biggest holdings in Phillips 66 include Berkshire Hathaway, The Vanguard Group, State Street Global Advisers, and BlackRock Institutional Trust Company. On average, analyzing the past six months’ data, only Berkshire Hathaway’s holdings have declined. The remaining institutions have increased their total holdings in Phillips 66.

Berkshire Hathaway is the biggest seller of PSX stock over the past six months. The second-biggest seller is JP Morgan Asset Management. Fidelity Management and Research Company and Epoch Investment Partners are the two biggest buyers of Phillips 66 stock in the past six months.
