Utilities at a 52-Week Low: What Are the Total Returns?

The Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLU) returned 2% in the past year. The total return is a more apt metric to measure utilities’ performance. The total return considers stock appreciation and dividends paid in a particular period.

Duke Energy (DUK) and Southern Company’s (SO) total returns were 1% and -6%, respectively, in the past year.

In comparison, broader markets returned nearly 20% during the same period.

SCANA (SCG) was the top loser among S&P 500 Utilities last year. SCANA’s nuclear project struggled in 2017. SCANA returned -43% in the past year. PG&E (PCG) returned -34%, while Edison International (EIX) returned -15%. Sempra Energy (SRE), the largest utility in California by market capitalization, returned 4% in the past year.
