Institutional investors hold most of Dominion Resources’ (D) outstanding shares. As of June 30, 2014, a total of 351.2 million shares were held by 1,069 institutions. They accounted for 60.3% of the total outstanding shares. The rest of the shares are held by retail investors and Dominion employees.

Top ten institutional holding

The Vanguard Group and State Street Global Advisors are Dominion’s top institutional investors. The two institutions hold 5.2% and 5%, respectively, of Dominion’s total outstanding shares. The top ten institutional investors hold ~28% of the total outstanding shares.

Other top asset management companies (or AMC) that own Dominion are BlackRock, Fidelity, and Bank of America. There have been net additions of more than 1.9 million Dominion shares by the top ten institutions from the last quarter ending March 31, 2014. This indicates that these institutions view stocks positively in the near term.

Other power companies with high institutional ownership

Entergy Corporation (ETR) has 92.8% of its outstanding shares owned by institutional investors. Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. (PEG) and Exelon Corporation (EXC) have an institutional ownership of 86.2% and 83.7%, respectively. Dominion forms 7.42% of the holdings in the Utilities Select Sector SPDR (XLU).
