Agilent Technologies’ Operational Performance

Agilent Technologies (A) incurred selling, general, and administrative expenses of $339 million in the third quarter of 2018 compared to $308 million in the third quarter of 2017 due to higher commissions, acquisition costs, and an increase in personnel costs.

Its research and development expenses increased from $87 million in the third quarter of 2017 to $97 million in the third quarter of 2018 due to higher program spending on new products and higher wages.

Agilent Technologies’ total operating expenses increased from $913 million in the third quarter of 2017 to $978 million in the third quarter of 2018. Its operating income grew from $201 million in the third quarter of 2017 to $225 million in the third quarter of 2018.

Bottom line

Agilent’s net other income increased from $5 million in the third quarter of 2017 to $26 million in the third quarter of 2018. Its interest expense was flat at $18 million in the third quarter of 2018 compared to $19 million in the third quarter of 2017. Its provision for income taxes decreased from $18 million in the third quarter of 2017 to $6 million in the third quarter of 2018.

Agilent Technologies generated net income of $236 million in the third quarter of 2018 compared to $175 million in the third quarter of 2017. That translates to net EPS of $0.73 in the third quarter of 2018. Its net earnings per share were $0.54 in the third quarter of 2017.
