In 4Q16, 181 funds were “buyers” of Encana’s (ECA) stock, and 172 funds were “sellers.” Buying funds outnumbered selling funds by nine. As of December 31, 2016, 350 13F filers held Encana in their portfolio, and 11 of those filers held Encana in their top ten holdings.

In 4Q16, 13F filers increased their aggregate Encana position by 3.3% from ~626.1 million shares to ~646.5 million shares. As of December 31, 2016, Encana had ~973 million common shares outstanding. Form 13F is an SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) mandate that must be submitted by all institutional investors who manage more than $100 million in assets.

Other upstream players

In 4Q16, 13F filers increased their aggregate share positions in EOG Resources (EOG), ConocoPhillips (COP), and Devon Energy (DVN). The First Trust ISE Revere Natural Gas ETF (FCG) invests in natural gas producers, whereas the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) invests at least 95% of its total assets in oil and gas companies.
