Performance of WestRock in fiscal 1Q17

WestRock (WRK) reported fiscal 1Q17 net sales of $3.45 billion, a fall of 0.7% compared to net sales of $3.47 billion in fiscal 1Q16. Sales from the Corrugated Packaging and Consumer Packaging segments fell 1.1% and 2.0%, respectively, in fiscal 1Q17 compared to fiscal 1Q16. The company’s gross profit margin narrowed 170 basis points, and its operating margin expanded 50 basis points in fiscal 1Q17 compared to fiscal 1Q16.

WestRock’s net income and EPS (earnings per share) rose to $80.9 million and $0.32, respectively, in fiscal 1Q17 compared to -$453.5 million and -$1.73, respectively, in fiscal 1Q16. It reported adjusted EPS of $0.47 in fiscal 1Q17.

WRK’s cash and cash equivalents and inventories rose 44.7% and 1.1%, respectively, between fiscal 1Q17 and fiscal 4Q16.
