A growing number of US citizens are seeking work outside of their home country. According to the State of Global Hiring from Deel, the number of American workers hired by international companies grew 62% last year, CNBC reported. However, for those looking to move out of the country, it can be difficult to decide where to go. Thus, here are the top 5 countries where U.S. citizens can move to build a career and start a new life.

1. Portugal

The seventh safest country in the world, according to the Global Peace Index, Portugal is a great option to live in. The cost of living in Portugal is low and the country has a mild climate with warm sunny days, beautiful beaches, great food, and a rich culture. Further, the quality of education in Portugal is high with several international schools and American international schools with the US academic system. The taxes are lower than in the US with plenty of job opportunities, according to a Digital Émigré report.

2. Spain

In the past couple of years, the number of Americans moving to Spain has grown significantly. As per the Global Peace Index, it is safer than America, and the quality of education and healthcare is at par with other European states. However, English is not a widely spoken language in Spain, but as per reports, it isn’t an obstacle for social services, banking, or the hospitality industry. Further, the Spain Golden Visa scheme brings a great opportunity for international expats to get Spanish citizenship.

3. United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is a rather obvious choice for Americans as the two countries share a common language. The UK further offers a highly advanced economy, and several American companies have their European headquarters in the UK. However, Americans get no special treatment when moving to the UK, and they do need to apply for a visa if they intend to work in the UK. People between the ages of 18 and 30 can get a working holiday visa in the UK.

4. Mexico

Mexico is one of the best countries for Americans to move to. Due to its proximity to the US and its favorable climate, Mexico has become home to more American expats than any other country in the world. US citizens moving to Mexico can apply for three types of visa, a 6-month holiday permit, a temporary working permit, or a permanent visa. The 6-month visa is recommended as it allows people to try out different locations and explore work opportunities before settling.

5. Canada

Canada is a great place to move into due to its progressive policies. The county also offers a list of mandatory employee benefits such as parental leave, 25 vacation days a year, and the highest minimum wage in North America. The cost of living is quite reasonable as well and it is one of the safest countries in the world. Canada also offers several job opportunities spanning across industries like IT, research, healthcare, and energy. It further shares a common language, English.
