Record-breaking opening weekend
Disney’s (DIS) latest movie, Incredibles 2, broke all box-office opening weekend records for animated films with $180 million in the domestic market. Disney’s Finding Dory, which was released in 2016, previously held the best opening weekend record for an animated movie.
Disney’s dominance in domestic box office
The above graph shows the top five animated films’ opening weekend performance. With the exception of Minions from Universal Pictures (CMCSA) and Shrek the Third from Dreamworks, the rest are from Disney. In fact, the top 11 movies by domestic opening weekend records belong to Disney. As per Box Office Mojo, Time Warner’s (TWX) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 at $169 million, holds the 12th spot.
The Incredibles came out back in 2004 and made an opening weekend collection of around $70 million. It then went on to earn $633 million in total.
