American Electric Power: Institutional Activity Up, Stock Down

American Electric Power (AEP), based in Columbus, Ohio, is a utility holding company with a market capitalization of $33 billion. It operates in 11 states and serves more than 5.4 million customers. Let’s have a look at its institutional activity in the first quarter.

As of March 31, the Vanguard Group held 7.7% of AEP’s total outstanding shares. It added net 0.7 million shares in the first quarter, which took its holdings up to 37.8 million shares.

BlackRock Institutional Trust is the second-largest institutional investor in AEP, with a 5.4% stake, or 26.6 million shares. It added net 0.6 million shares in the first quarter.

Wellington Management increased its stake by adding net 8 million shares during the quarter. As of March 31, it held 1.9% of AEP’s total outstanding shares.

Capital Research Global Advisers lowered its stake in AEP to 3.3% during the quarter. It sold net 1.1 million shares of AEP and held more than 16 million shares as of March 31.

JPMorgan Asset Management added 0.9 million shares of AEP in the first quarter, holding 1.3% of AEP’s total outstanding shares as of March 31.

So far in 2018, AEP stock has fallen more than 8%, mirroring the weakness in the broader utilities (XLU) (IDU).
