EA’s Mobile Gaming Revenue: Key Drivers



Net mobile bookings rose over 5% in 3Q18

In the chart below, we can see that net bookings for Electronic Arts’ (EA) Mobile platform rose 5% YoY (year-over-year) to $183 million in fiscal 3Q18, up from $174 million in fiscal 3Q17 and $162 million in fiscal 3Q16. In the trailing-12-month period, mobile net bookings rose to $658 million at the end of fiscal 3Q18, compared to $626 million and $547 million at the end of fiscal 3Q17 and 3Q16, respectively.

Live Services net bookings rose 39% YoY in fiscal 3Q18 to $787 million, up from $566 million in fiscal 3Q17 while Full Game Downloads revenue fell 27% YoY to $260 million, compared to $355 million in fiscal 3Q17.

On EA’s fiscal 3Q18 earnings call, CEO Andrew Wilson stated, “On mobile, we’re bringing more players into our network from across the world through the unique breadth and depth of our IP.” Star Wars Galaxy, The Sims FreePlay and EA’s various sports titles continue to attract players, allowing the company to reach a diverse audience.

FIFA Mobile and Sims Mobile

We’ve already seen that FIFA Mobile added 26 million players to its existing player base in fiscal 3Q18, which was a record quarter in the trailing-12-month period for EA. This game is hugely popular in China (FXI) and South Korea (EWY). EA plans to launch the Sims Mobile on iOS and Android (GOOG)(GOOGL) in fiscal 4Q18, which is a big leap forward for the game.
