Salesforce App Cloud named leader by Forrester Research

Earlier in this series, we discussed Salesforce (CRM) Commerce Cloud’s leadership in the market. In it Forrester Wave report in late March 2017, Forrester Research designated Salesforce App Cloud as the leader among peers.

App Cloud is an offshoot of the company’s Salesforce 1 platform. According to Salesforce, “The Salesforce1 Platform brings together Force.com, Heroku, and ExactTarget into one family of cloud services — all built API first — to help deliver apps that connect products, users, and next generation experiences.” Heroku, which is Salesforce’s application development platform, is hosted on Amazon’s (AMZN) Amazon Web Services (or AWS). Salesforce App Cloud, launched in September 2015, was designed specifically for the enterprise crowd.

Commenting on App Cloud, IDC Research analyst Al Hilwa stated that “With App Cloud, Salesforce is integrating Heroku a bit more deeply with its force.com traditional model-driven application platform.” It is an important update and an essential step in driving the company’s mobile development strategy.

Salesforce App Cloud is the preferred choice after Azure and AWS

According to a report by Synergy Research, the cloud market rose 25.0% YoY (year-over-year) to become a $148.0 billion market in 2016. Among services and offerings, IaaS (infrastructure-as-a-service) and PaaS (platform-as-a-service) grew the most, by 53.0%.

The above graph shows the results of a survey by Sumo Logic, a data analytics company. The survey showed that companies prefer Microsoft (MSFT) Azure over AWS in the Iaas and PaaS spaces. Salesforce App Cloud was preferred by 28% of respondents, while 23% and 20% showed a preference for IBM Cloud (IBM) and Google Cloud (GOOG), respectively.
