Let’s have a look at some operational aspects of utilities. US utilities switched their generation from coal to low-emitting natural gas in the last few years. Among our hand-picked hybrid utilities, FirstEnergy (FE) still derives more than 55% of its power from coal.

On the other hand, Exelon (EXC) and Public Service Enterprise Group (PEG) derive nearly 64% and 42%, respectively, of their total power from nuclear generation.

Natural gas prices started to increase again in mid-2016, which pushed utilities to return to cost-effective coal. As the future of the Clean Power Plan appears to be uncertain, US utilities may continue to burn coal in the meantime.
