IBM awarded maximum patents in the US for 23rd year
In the tech sector particularly, patents are looked upon as a barometer for judging a company’s expertise and technological value relative to its peers. Although IBM (IBM) took its time to realize the importance of cloud in the dynamically changing IT landscape, it now holds the title of being the company with the maximum patents for 23 consecutive years. According to IFI CLAIMS Patent Services, IBM topped the Top 10 US Patent Recipients in 2015.
Technology and electronic companies granted maximum patents in 2015
As of 2015, IBM has secured 7,355 patents, among which more than 2,000 belonged to the cognitive computing and cloud space. During the 23 years leading up to 2015, IBM’s inventors received a total of 88,000 US patents, according to a company press release celebrating the achievement. In 2015, IBM was granted 7,355 patents, and more than 2,000 of them were in the areas of cognitive computing and cloud solutions.
Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) holds the second place position, with 5,072 patents. If you look at the Top 10 patent recipients list, you’ll see that it’s comprised of leading technology and electronics players like Microsoft (MSFT), Intel (INTC), Google (GOOG), Sony (SNE), Toshiba and LG. Apple, for example, came in 11th place, falling short by just 18 patents of making the Top 10.
Investors interested in gaining broad-based exposure to IBM might consider investing in the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW), which has an exposure of 46.7% to application software and invests about 12.5% of its holdings in IBM.
