Carnival Corporation (CCL) operates four cruise brands in the North American market. One is a contemporary brand, one is a luxury brand, and two are premium cruises.

The North American cruise market is the largest cruise market in the world. It’s dominated by brands offered by Carnival Corporation (CCL), Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL), and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH). Carnival’s four North American brands carry ~30% of the world’s cruise passengers.

Let’s take a closer look at Carnival’s four North American cruise brands.

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Linesfounded in 1972, is the largest cruise line in the world by global cruise passengers. It operates 24 ships, carries ~20% of the world’s cruise passengers, and is one of the three largest contemporary brands. These three brands comprise ~47% of the world’s cruise passengers and ~30% of the world’s cruise revenue.

The other two contemporary brands, Royal Caribbean International and Norwegian Cruise Lines, are offered by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH), respectively. These companies are part of ETFs such as the PowerShares Dynamic Leisure and Entertainment Portfolio (PEJ) and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY).

Carnival Cruise Lines offers cruise durations of three to eight days to the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Mexico. It also offers seasonal cruises to New England, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, and the Panama Canal.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises operates a fleet of 17 ships. It’s the world’s largest premium cruise line based on passenger capacity and has been providing cruises since 1965.

The brand offers 125 itineraries to more than 310 destinations with a cruise duration of seven to 14 days. Shorter duration cruises of three to four days were introduced in 2013. It also offers two world cruises for more than 100 days. It carries ~8% of the world’s cruise passengers.

Holland America Line

The Holland America Line operates a fleet of 15 ships. The brand offers more than 500 cruises with a duration of seven to 21 days. It also offers four longer exotic voyages up to 113 days.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn Cruise Line is Carnival Corporation’s ultra-luxury brand. It provides seven- to 14-day cruises to destinations throughout the world. The services are more personalized since the ships are smaller with spacious all-suite accommodations.
