Institutional Ownership in Integrated Energy Stocks Stand after 3Q17

Variations in institutional ownership in integrated energy stocks

Variations in institutional ownership in ExxonMobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX), Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A), and BP (BP) have shown a diverse trend in the past six months. While institutional ownership in XOM, Shell, and BP has declined, it has risen in CVX.

Institutional ownership in XOM, Shell, and BP fell 0.3%, 0.3%, and 3.2%, respectively, from May 2017 to ~51.0%, ~12.0%, and ~10.0%, respectively, in November 2017. However, CVX saw a 0.6% rise in its institutional ownership to ~65.0% in the same period.

Institutional ownership in XOM and CVX

The institutions with the highest ownership in XOM and CVX include The Vanguard Group, State Street Global Advisors, BlackRock Institutional Trust Company, and Wellington Management Company.

On an average considering the past six months data, Vanguard and Blackrock have increased their total holdings in XOM and CVX. However, State Street and Wellington have decreased their total holdings in these stocks.

The top two buyers of ExxonMobil stock in the past six months have been Vanguard and First Eagle Investment Management. The top two sellers have been State Street Global Advisors and Rafferty Asset Management.

For Chevron, the largest buyer has been Federated Investment Management Company, and the largest seller has been T. Rowe Price Associates in the past six months.

Institutional holdings in Shell

The institutions with the largest holdings in Shell include Franklin Advisers, Fidelity Management and Research Company, Blackrock Financial Management, and Dimensional Fund Advisors. Of these institutions, Franklin Advisers and Fidelity Management and Research Company have reduced their total holdings in Shell on an average considering the data from the past six months.

But Blackrock Financial Management and Dimensional Fund Advisers have increased their total holdings in Shell.

The top couple of sellers of Shell stock in past six months have been T. Rowe Price Associates and Arrowstreet Capital. However, Boston Partners and Blackrock Financial Management have been the top two buyers of the Shell stock.

Institutional ownership in BP

Institutions with largest ownerships in BP include Barrow, Hanley, Mewhinney & Strauss, State Street Global Advisers, Dimensional Fund Advisers, and Franklin Advisers. On an average considering past six months data, all the four institutions have lowered their total holdings in BP.

Bank of Montreal Ireland has sold the largest numbers of BP shares in the past six months. However, T. Rowe Price Associates has bought the largest number of BP shares in the past six months.
