BlackBerry’s Latest Partnership in the Licensing Segment
BlackBerry’s (BBRY) Licensing revenue consists of device software licensing, IP licensing, and technology licensing. In device software licensing, China’s hardware partners China’s (FXI) TCL and Indonesia’s BB Merah Putih have started shipping of BlackBerry-branded devices. In fiscal 3Q18, BlackBerry expects India’s Optiemus to start shipping devices as well.
BlackBerry recently entered into a partnership and licensing agreement for its BlackBerry Android (GOOG)(GOOGL) operating systems with the China-based NTD. NTD plans to manufacture and distribute smartphone devices that are branded by OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), carriers, and local smartphone brands.

The device will be marketed as BlackBerry Secure, as it will have BlackBerry’s security software. According to BlackBerry’s senior vice president and general manager of Mobility Solutions, Alex Thurber, “This marks the next phase of our licensing strategy, which is focused on enabling vendors to bring to market mobile communication devices that aren’t just secure, but BlackBerry Secure. We’re thrilled to partner with NTD and Equiis and look forward to extending this dynamic relationship to include more carriers and a range of devices.”
Devices shipping next year
BlackBerry expects the device to ship in the first half of calendar 2018, and it has agreements with four carriers. This agreement is slated to expand to include other carriers and devices.
