Xcel Energy (XEL) has a healthy dividend profile. It increased its dividends for the last 13 consecutive years. However, it should be noted that its dividend payout ratio was 61% in 2016—well below its industry peers (XLU). The ratio shows how much of its earnings a company distributes to shareholders in the form of dividends.

Xcel’s management has a target dividend payout ratio of 60%–70% in the future.

In comparison, utilities like Southern Company (SO) and Duke Energy (DUK) pay out nearly 83% of their earnings in the form of dividends. NextEra Energy’s (NEE) payout ratio stands near 53%. The relatively lower dividend payout ratio could be one of the reasons behind Xcel Energy’s lower yield.
