Asia-Pacific accounted for 47% of total gaming revenue in 2016

As the below chart shows, Asia-Pacific accounted for 47%, or $46.6 billion, of total gaming revenue last year. Revenue in this region rose 10.7% YoY (year-over-year) in 2016, according to research firm Newzoo. North America was the second biggest gaming market and accounted for 25% of total revenue, followed by Europe, Middle East & Africa and Latin America at 24% and 4%, respectively. Revenue growth from Latin America was the highest at 20.1% last year.

Mobile gaming revenue to account for 37% of total market

A research report from Newzoo stated that mobile gaming revenue in 2016 will account for 37% of the total gaming market. Mobile games are expected to generate $36.9 billion in revenue for 2016.

The top 20 countries generated over 89% of revenue in 2016. China, the United States, Japan, and South Korea lead the gaming segment with revenue of $24.4 billion, $23.6 billion, $12.4 billion, and $4 billion, respectively.

China and South Korea are major markets for EA and Activision (ATVI) outside the United States (SPY). Activision’s Overwatch, which was launched in May 2016, currently has over 15 million players and is popular in Asian countries including China (FXI) and Korea.
