Microsoft’s Internet of Things initiatives
Previously in this series, we discussed Microsoft’s (MSFT) recent acquisition in the IoT (Internet of Things) space, Solair. This acquisition is in line with the company’s increasing investments in Azure to establish it as a comprehensive enterprise IoT platform.
In the past, Microsoft has collaborated with Salesforce (CRM). It uses Salesforce IoT Cloud along with its own Azure. In early 2016, Microsoft freed its SQL Server to run on Linux. By bringing the SQL Server to Linux, Azure will be able to run on Amazon’s (AMZN) AWS (Amazon Web Services), which is a public cloud and mainly Linux-based.

Gartner’s recent estimates show that the number of connected gadgets will grow to 20.8 billion by 2020, compared with 6.4 billion in 2016. The above chart shows various research firms’ estimates. As the IoT space holds immense potential, Microsoft is aggressively targeting it. It released an edition of Windows 10 for IoT devices. Also, as we have stated in the past, Microsoft is taking on several initiatives to attract developers’ interests. Microsoft’s Azure has a suite of tools that developers can use to build IoT services.
Tremendous growth expected
Peers IBM and Amazon are also showing a keen interest in this space. IBM is working on offerings in 20 sectors, with initiatives in IoT and commerce. Also, to boost its footing in the IoT space, IBM acquired The Weather Company. Amazon, an undisputed leader in the cloud space, acquired 2lemetry, an IoT platform startup, in March 2015.
You could consider investing in the PowerShares QQQ Trust, Series 1 ETF (QQQ) to gain exposure to Microsoft, which makes up 8.4% of QQQ. Investors who would like application software exposure could also consider this fund, as application software makes up ~28.4% of QQQ.
