Monthly Active Users Rise by 26% YoY for Baidu in 3Q15

Monthly active users 643 million in 3Q15

Baidu’s (BIDU) mobile search monthly active users (or MAUs) were 643 million in 3Q15, a rise of 26% YoY (or year-over-year). Mobile maps MAUs rose 34% YoY to 326 million in 3Q15 whereas gross merchandise value for transaction services rose 119% YoY in 3Q15 to $9.5 billion. Activated accounts for Baidu Wallet reached 45 million at the end of 3Q15, a rise of 520% YoY.

Share repurchase program

In 3Q15, Baidu completed its share repurchase program authorized by its board of directors in July 2015. Under the program, Baidu repurchased 6 million ADSs (American depository shares) for approximately $1 billion.

On September 29, 2015, Baidu announced that its board of directors had authorized a share repurchase program where the company would repurchase up to $1 billion of its shares over the next 12 months. In a press release, Baidu mentioned, “The Company’s proposed repurchases may be made from time to time on the open market at prevailing market prices, in privately negotiated transactions, in block trades and/or through other legally permissible means, depending on market conditions and in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.”

On October 22, 2015, Baidu again announced that its board of directors had authorized a share repurchase program where the company would repurchase up to $2 billion of its shares over the next 24 months.

Technology companies leading

In the chart above we can see that technology companies are leading in terms of share buyback with Apple (AAPL), Qualcomm (QCOM), Microsoft (MSFT), and Oracle (ORCL) repurchasing shares worth $10 billion, $4.4 billion, $4.2 billion, and $2 billion, respectively.

Baidu constitutes 6.0% and 0.83% of the First Trust ISE Chindia ETF (FNI) and the PowerShares QQQ ETF (QQQ), respectively.
